CAD

The CAD (Complexity at Distance) is a screening device used to observe if students have difficulty locating specific targets, at 10 feet, when presented on a typical Grade 2 or Grade 3 white board. The CAD is used mostly by teachers of students with visual impairments when completing Functional Vision Evaluations and Learning Media Assessments. The CAD was designed to use with students who have a diagnosis of Cortical Visual Impairments (CVI) or some other form of brain damage related vision loss, typically in Kindergarten or higher, or functioning at a level where there would be an understanding of the names of shapes and what “the same” means.

By using the CAD, special education teachers (CTVI’s) can gain a better understanding of what their student has difficulty with, when viewing a typical (sometimes visually “cluttered”) white board. Recent literature has indicated that students with Cortical Visual Impairment often have difficulty viewing materials at distance, particularly when there is a great deal of visual clutter surrounding the target of interest. Observing if a student is able to locate specific targets on a typical white board can provide valuable information for the classroom teacher. Observations can also lend support for implementing specific strategies and accommodations when the student is expected to take in visual information at distance.
